Born in Nicosia Cyprus in 1976, Notis Georgiou began studying music at the National Odeum of Cyprus. Later, adding Double Bass lessons to his curriculum, he soon became the lead Double Bassist of the National Youth Orchestra of Cyprus. After he graduated from the National Odeum, he continued his studies in music performance and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music--in Budapest, Hungary. At the age of 17 he won First Prize in the Hungarian Guitar Competition, gaining an internationalreputation. Three years later, Notis Georgiou made his solo debut in the World Premiere of Concertino per Ventidueby Pai Rozza, the first guitar competition ever written by a Hungarian composer which was dedicated to this young musician. In 1998, he graduated with honors from the Liszt Academy of Music. In 1999, Georgiou was enrolled in a one year post graduate course in conducting with the Florence Symfonietta, under the guidance of the widely reputed Maestro Piero Bellugi . While there, he received his diploma in conducting from the Conservatory of Music Luigi Cherubinii, in Florence Italy. After returning to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 2000, he received his masters in music degree under the supervision of Maestro Ervin Lukacs and Tamas Gal. In the same year, Georgiou gave another World Premiere, this time as the conductor of Pal Rozsa's orchestral work, Viva Ludwig Van, a work also dedicated to him by the composer. Having now gained an international reputation, the young conductor was offered a series of world premiere works to conduct by several European masters. During this time, Notis participated in Master classes given by prestigious conductors, such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Zubin Mehta, Rudlolph Bashai, Yuri Simonov, Marek Janowski, Leopold Hager, Gainluigi Gelmetti, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Peter Eolvos, Theodore Guschibauer and El Saedi. In the last few years, Maestro Georgiou has served in numerous conducting posts as the Conductor and Manager of the Symphony Orchestra of the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior, Music Director and Conductor of the Bela Bartok Music Academy Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Conductor of the International Youth Orchestra Workshops of Godolio, Hungary. Since 2002, he holds the position as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Vass Lajos Symphony Orchestra in Budapest, Hungary. Additional activities include the position of Tutor of Chamber Music at the Bela Bartok Music Academy, Chief Conductor of the Elimnion Festival, Associate Conductor of the Cyprus Summer Opera Festival, Guest Conductor of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, (MAV), Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Cyprus State Orchestra, Greek State Orchestra, Cairo Opera House, Cairo Symphony Orchestra and the Florence Sinfonietta, just to name a few. Maestro Georgiou has participated in orchestral tours, recitals and chamber music concerts in Austria, Germany, Italy, Greece, Hungary, France, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland and Egypt. Since 2001, he has been the guest conductor of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. On June 1, 2006, Maestro Georgiou was appointed Resident Conductor. He has collaborated with various notable soloists such as, Giacomini, Vargas, Kavakos, Ivan Moravec, Mezo`Laszio, Vassillis Papavassiliou and Tokody. He has recently become an Honored Jury Member of the International Music Festival of Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels. His live and studio recordings of his performances are repeatedly aired on national television and radio in Germany, Austria, Greece, Belgium, Hungary, Cyprus, Italy and Egypt. |
