Pianist Lei Weng was hailed as "the exceptionally brilliant Chinese pianist" in his Seattle debut of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Northwest Mahler Festival Symphony. Lei Weng has won major national and international competitions, including the top prizes in the Isabel Scionti International Piano Competition and the Camerata Piano Competition, Silver Medal in the Wideman International Piano Competition. He is also a prize winner in the Grace Welsh International Piano Competition, the Kingsville International Competition and the TCU/Cliburn Piano Competition. Mr. Weng has performed throughout North America and Asia, at such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Austrian Culture Center in New York, Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., Meany Hall in Seattle, Ozawa Hall in Tanglewood, Washington Library Center in Chicago, Banff Center in Canada, and Beijing Music Hall. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Fort Worth Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, Camerata Symphony, NW Mahler Festival Symphony, China National Symphony and Chorus, Beijing Symphony and Tianjin Symphony. Lei Weng’s performances have been critically acclaimed as "spirited and full of nuances" by The Cincinnati Post. The Herald Times calls him "colorful and flamboyant" and claims "there can be no doubt of his proficiency." China’s Tianjin Daily remarks on Lei Weng’s "profound and immense artistry" and Scott Cantrell, music critic from the Dallas Morning News exclaims: "Fabulous playing – really fresh, personal! I love the unpredictability, the willingness to take chances, not just to sound like someone else. " Mr. Weng is also an active performer of chamber music and has worked closely and collaborated with such world-renowned musicians as James Levine, Emanuel Ax, Claude Frank, Cho-liang Lin, Phyllis Curtin, Dawn Upshaw, Pamela Frank, as well as members from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony and Indianapolis Symphony. He has been invited by the prestigious Tanglewood Music Festival, as one of only three pianists to perform solo and chamber music concerts. His chamber music performances have also included the Linton Chamber Music Series, the Sarasota Festival, the Banff Center, the Grandin Festival and the Wyoming Fine Art Center concert series. Mr. Weng has released two critically claimed CDs. Passion From the Romantic Era, released by Vital Sound company, features Brahms Piano and Violin Sonata. Live recording of the Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concert No. 3, performed with the Northwest Mahler Festival Symphony, has been released on the NWMF label. NPR has broadcast a personal interview with Mr. Weng, and his performances have been broadcast on radios and televisions nationwide. His most recent engagements include concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York, Phillips Collection in Washington DC, Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Wyoming Fine Art Center, University of Cincinnati, Wright State University, Xavier University, and concerts throughout China. |
